SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL 2011

Liverpool John Mitchels v St Brendans

Mitchels entertained St Brendans at Oisin’s Old Bedians ground on a splendid September’s day in Mitchel’s fifth county final in a row.

St Brendans started brightly with a fine free to open the scoring. Paddy Mulligan replied with a great 35 yards point with the right peg to leave it 1-1 after 5 mins. Following this great score Micky Molloy dummied on the right and slotted over with the left, showing the large crowd what an asset the Donegal man is to the Mitchel’s cause. St Brendans equalised with a great score from Darragh Tierney to make it 2-2.

The tit for tat continued with a nice score from Kevy Kane followed by a point from Brendan’s Darragh Tierney. Mulligan replied with a great free followed by a good free by Stephan Sands, leaving it 4-4 after 20 mins. A lovely free from Mulligan was followed by great play from Kane slotting in Molloy for another left pegger point leaving it 6-4 in Mitchels favour.

Two frees for Brendans was followed by another fine point from Micky Molloy leaving the score 8 – 6 at half time.

Second Half

A good score from Lee Gavin for Brendans was followed up by another free from Darragh Tierney leaving it 8-8 after 38 mins. The turning point in the game was the harsh sending off of John McDermott. The all to common 14 man mentality kicked in and Mitchels stepped up through the gears for the next 20 mins. Two frees in quick succession from Molloy left the score line 10-8 after 45 mins.

Just whilst there looked to be a glimmer of hope for St Brendans, Marty Carey broke free from defence running the field and scoring a fantastic fisted point. This was followed by a great score from Mulligan and Fergal Doyle. All three points in quick succession was the turning point and sealed the nail in the coffin for a spirited Brendans team.

Two frees for Brendans in the dying minutes left the scoreline 13-10 in Mitchels favour. Captain Paddy Mulligan, in his passionate speech, alluded to the great display of character from the young Brendans side who fielded 9 home grown players. In what was their first Senior final in 18 years, many will see them as contenders once again next year.

On behalf of the committee and all involved with the Club we would like to congratulate Mitchels making it four out of five Senior Titles. Mitchels will play the winners of London’s Round Towers and St Josephs in the All-Britain Quarter Final on 9 October in Pairc na Eirean Birmingham.
