John Mitchels Liverpool Ladies GFC on tour at the All-Ireland Sevens

On Saturday 24th September, John Mitchels Ladies Liverpool took part in the All-Ireland Sevens for the first time at Naomh Mearnog and St Sylvester’s in Dublin. Ten players made the trip from Liverpool and had a great day at the competition. Ninety teams from Ireland, England and Europe participated and the Mitchels girls more than held their own against some tough teams in the intermediate section.

First up was Cooley Kickhams from Louth and it was an entertaining and free scoring game which set the tone for the standard of football for the day. Mitchels unfortunately lost the game as Cooley scored three goals at the end of the match to finish winners on a score line of 6-6 to 1-10.

It seemed that the end of match affected the girls in the second game against Tuam/Cortoon from Galway as they started slowly and found themselves 4-5 to 0-3 down at the short whistle. However, the Mitchels girls stood up and said enough was enough and produced a barnstorming second half performance that had the rest of the teams talking as they produced an outstanding comeback to win the game 5-9 to 5-8. Kick started by an impossible point with the left foot of Cate Herron from the corner and finished with a goal from Elaine Murphy with the last kick of the game. It was obvious to all that Mitchels were not just here to make up the numbers.

The third game against Arklow Geraldine’s from Wicklow saw the Mitchels girls produce a great team display from the start as they closed down Arklow’s danger players and kept the scoreboard ticking over to win the match 1-8 to 2-1. All of a sudden the team from Liverpool found themselves in contention to qualify for the knockout stages and entered the last game against Skerries Harps from Dublin in a winner takes all showdown.

This final game was one of two halves as the girls from Liverpool made an impressive start and led 1-4 to 0-1 at the short whistle. Unfortunately Skerries responded, as all good teams do and produced an excellent second half as the made headway into the deficit from the start. As the Mitchel’s girls tired towards the end they had no answer as Skerries took the lead and held on at the death to eliminate John Mitchels on a score line of 2-7 to 1-8 in another entertaining game.

John Mitchels would like to thank all that was involved in arranging a great day, especially the Naomh Mearnog and St Sylvester’s clubs for providing such a warm welcome and an extremely well run day which everyone enjoyed. Everyone that travelled to Dublin for the weekend had a great time and the club would like to thank all that travelled and for the excellent performances that the team put on. Everyone played their part and it would unfair to single out players for individual performances in what was a superb team weekend. Well done to Tara, Fiona, Lisa, Cate, Joanne, Amanda, Elaine, June, Maura and Ann Marie. Roll on next year’s event.
