Club Notes - March 2011

02 March 2011

John Mitchel's Gaelic Football Club Liverpool are currently looking for new players for the up and coming season.

We are one of the most successful gaelic football clubs in the UK, in recent history. We are the current Lancashire Junior Championship holders, a title we have held for an unprecedented 5 years in a row. We are also the current Pennine League Champions, for the fourth year running.

John Mitchel's have won the Lancashire Senior Championship from 2007 - 2009 and completed back to back All Britain titles in 2007 and 2008. The 2008 season culminated in an historic run to Croke Park with victories against the Leinster and Connaught Champions en route to a Valentines Day decider in the All Ireland Junior Club Final.

We are looking for players and club members of all ages and ability to help develop the club and maintain the success of the past 5 years. Our underage development is part of our achievements to date, with six schools now playing Gaelic Football. We hope to participate in Lancashire Under 12 and Under 14 games this year.

Mitchels have a Junior and Senior team so if you are interested in joining us please contact us on:

Liverpool John Mitchels v Liverpool Wolfetones

Lancashire Junior League, Wavertree Park

Sunday 27 March 2011

In glorious sunshine at the debutant Wavertree Park 5-times reigning Junior Championship Winners Liverpool John Mitchels took on the newly formed Liverpool Wolfetones for the first time. As expected, proceedings commenced with the obligatory hard hits and tough tackling. However, it was Mitchels that got their noses in front, in a footballing sense, with great scores from Paddy Murphy, Ryan Mullan and Ed Jackson. A great flowing Mitchels move, between Mick McCarthy, Ed Jackson and “Charlie” Mullan saw the man who started it all, McCarthy, hit high into the roof of the net from close range. Within minutes a strong Mitchels attack was broke down, the ball went up the field and Wolfetones Conor Cassidy blasted, a long range effort goal-wards, which deceived Farrelly, in nets, resulting in a goal.  This was a glitch in a strong Mitchels defence, in the form of, Alan Brown, Colly McMenamin, Tony Drummond, Joe Gervin and Paul O’Brien which was too much for the Wolfetones who struggled all over the park.

From Cassidy’s goal onwards it was all Mitchels. Further points from Murphy, Jackson and Lenny Conlin saw Mitchels go into half time 1-10 to 1-02 up. The second half commenced pretty much as the first half ended with Mitchels domination. Half time replacements, Cathair Mullan and Padraig Brennan showed why they should be pushing for starting places with great movement and getting their own scores. A long range effort from “Sligo” Brennan and two magnificent outside of the right boot attempts from “Eyes” Mullan will not go unnoticed with the Mitchels Management. Sheepy, Sean Carty and Marty Carey  all had their parts to play as second half substitutes.

Just one yellow card in the match showed that the match was played in a good sporting spirit and hopefully the productive rivalry will continue for many years to come. Mitchels next port of call is a Kimacud Crokes style Mini-7s tournament in Bristol on Saturday 2 April 2011. Membership is still outstanding for many players and former members.
